#devongirlscan #thisgirlcan

So, seen the hash tags? Wondering what it's all about? Quite simply...

This Girl Can is a national campaign developed by Sport England and a wide range of partnership organisations. It’s a celebration of active women up and down the country who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets.

Today is the launch of #thisgirlcan2017 and yesterday the launch of #devongirlscan. There's nothing, NOTHING to stop any of you out there doing your thing and getting fit. About 10 years ago, I'd had my first daughter and unfortunately for me, my cravings all the way through my pregnancy were for crap - I craved Pot Noodles, spicy bean burgers from Burger King, Monster Munch - anything additive laden and full of crap, I couldn't keep my hands off them. Normally, I'm a healthy eating pescetarian but not for those 9 months! The obvious down side of this was that I put on a lot of weight...from a size 12 to a size 18. Then a friend said to me 'I can get your running without you hating it - give me a month and a commitment of 1/2 hour 3 days a week'. I took the challenge and never looked back. My first week was something like run a minute walk a minute 10 times and within a month I'd done a mile. Unbelievable. Not bad for a girl who prided herself on never even running for a bus! Shortly after was my first 5km race. Then a 10km race. As I got fitter, my confidence grew, I joined the local council run gym and started classes there. Then nearly 5 years ago I completed a 1/2 marathon, slow but sure & no stopping. I'll never win prizes for speed but for me it's all about achievement. I know how far I've come, how much weight I've lost and just how fit I am now. Last years challenge was my first triathlon, OK it was a super sprint distance (that's a smaller distance than a normal triathlon) but it was still a 400m sea swim, 18km bike ride and 2.5 km run and I did it! Now I'm getting quite into road biking and this years challenge is the 35 mile Dartmoor Classic which I'm training for already. I love my gym classes and currently go to BodyPump, BodyCombat, pilates and Complete Core each week. I also play badminton, cycle and run once a week with my 11 year old daughter. Remember, 10 years ago, I did NOTHING! Today, I'm pretty shattered, I've done Complete Core and then a 9.5 mile bike ride which may not sound far but believe me, the hills around where I live in south Devon aren't small and there were several of them in our ride! So, basically, what I'm saying is that it doesn't matter how unfit you are or what size you are, if you're proactive and determined, start with a manageable goal (so you don't hate it from day one) and get out there...you won't regret it and quite simply, ANYTHING is possible with training...

Check out these websites for inspiration and you go girl...(and guys)...
